There are a number of individuals who are helping Friends of the Neuro Ward (FONW) to raise profile and funds for improvements to the Neuro Ward. Here are a few of them.

Mr Peter Bodkin

Consultant Neurosurgeon

Mr Bodkin has been a consultant neurosurgeon at ARI since 2014.  He graduated from Manchester University in 2000 and trained mainly in Edinburgh and Aberdeen.  He is a general neurosurgeon undertaking most aspects of neurosurgical practice.  He has a special interest in complex spine, facial pain, and neuro-oncology. Training the future generation of neurosurgeons is important to him and he set up the Scottish National Teaching Programme for local trainees and runs the practice exit exam course for British and international trainee neurosurgeons. 

Mr M.H. Kamel

Mr Mahmoud Kamel graduated with honours MBBS in 1994. He has completed a Master’s degree on the role of Stereotaxy in localisation of craniotomy and a Doctorate of Medicine on intraventricular uses of neuro-endoscopy.

Mr Kamel completed training in skull base surgery under world-renowned Prof Al-Mefty in USA in 2008.  He was appointed as a full time NHS Consultant Neurosurgeon in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in University of Aberdeen in July 2008.

Speech and Language Neuro Therapist

Penny is a speech and language therapist (SLT), as part of the team working with patients on the Neuro Ward. She has been a SLT on the ward since 1994. 

The charity has been tremendous in supporting both the funding of vital equipment for patients and supporting patients and their families within the North East of Scotland.  They have donated a facial nerve monitoring machine to the department one of only 6 in the UK.

Margaret has been a Clinical Nurse Specialist since 2001. Prior to this she was Sister in Neurosciences and one of the research nurses for the Scottish Study of Malignant Brain Tumours that helped to set up the first brain tumour support group at Cancer Link Aberdeen and North.
 
She meets the majority of patients and their families following surgery and make arrangements for follow up at the neuro-oncology clinic after discussion with the multi-disciplinary team. She attends clinics with Dr Moleron, liaises with the patient’s primary care team and makes referrals to care management, Macmillan community nurses, psychology/ neuro-psychology and for financial advice. She provides written information for patients and families.

Claire works on behalf of the department of neurosciences in the surgical division at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.  She has worked as part of the management team at ARI since 2005 and has been with Neurosciences department since 2013. Her role includes assisting the clinical lead, Mr Kamel, and the other staff in the department with the day-to-day managerial issues. Her role includes service planning and redesign as well and quality and safety.

Claire’s role also includes the management of the Neurology, Neurophysiology and Neuropsychology services which come under the umbrella of Neurosciences.

Caroline founded Friends of the Neuro Ward in 2013.  Along with Carolyn, she focuses on working with NHS Grampian on improving patient care on the Neuro Ward. Based in Orkney, she organises regular fundraising events, including the bi-ennual Orkney Garden festival and actively lobbied Parliament to increase the 1% of Cancer Research which money which is currently spent on Brain Cancer.

Carolyn was elected as co-chair of Friends of the Neuro Ward, alongside founder Caroline Critchlow, in 2015.  Carolyn focuses on working with NHS Grampian on improving patient care on the Neuro Ward. Carolyn first became involved with brain tumour fundraising when she established the Bare All for Brain Tumours group after her husband Mark was diagnosed with a Grade 3 Oligodendro-glioma Astrocytoma at the age of 32.  The fundraising group raises funds for the clinical research project into malignant Brain Tumours at the Wolfson Wohl cancer research centre.

Amanda (known as Mandy) is a local businesswoman in Kirkwall.  She first met fellow board member Caroline Critchlow in September 2011, when they were both starting their own businesses and the two have subsequently became close friends. After the charity was established, Mandy was appointed as secretary. The passion to raise the necessary funds to benefit others in a similar situation was infectious and she could not help but get involved.

We’ll do whatever it takes; sharing a story; shaking tins, baking cakes, running marathons. Our absolute determination will keep us going until patients get the dignity, care and comfort they deserve at every step.
